hurting from my first HIIT workout

November 29, 2011

Hi, friends!  What better time than the week after Thanksgiving to try two totally new workouts? Yesterday morning I did my first barre workout and today I felt daring enough to try this HIIT workout from Blogilates.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with HIIT, it stands for high intensity interval training and is a series of intense bursts of exercise with short intervals of rest between moves.  I can promise you I didn’t look this excited but here’s an example of one of the moves I did this morning, the Star Squat.

This workout was a series of 8 different moves performed for 1 minute, followed by 30 seconds of rest and repeated 4 times.

It lasted about 50 minuts but after round 2 I had to modify the routine because my legs were giving out! I substituted 2 moves with some bicep curls and shoulder presses using 5 pound weights, while walking around my living room.  Instead of getting discouraged by an overly challenging workout, I modified it so was challenging but still doable.

One of the best things about HIIT workouts are that you need minimal space and equipment to do them! Here’s where the magic happened this morning.

Talk about a great travel workout! This is totally doable in a hotel room.

I’m super sore right now but other than that I  feel great. I worked a lot of muscles I normally don’t hit with running and yoga, which is great because I need to do some strengthening work.

After HIITing it up in the living room, I hobbled into the kitchen for some breakfast.

and some delicious green juice made with kale, celery, apple, carrot, ginger and lemon.

Today’s been quite busy between class and work and I have a night of studying planned – trying to keep up on things before finals begin!  Have a great afternoon, everyone!

Questions:

Have you ever tried HIIT workouts?  Love ‘em or hate ‘em? It’s kind of both for me.

Where do you get your routines from? I love Blogilates – she even has videos which are adorable and make me happy.  This was the workout I did this morning.  It’s called The Food Baby!

I tried the HIT class last week at my gym. That class seriously kicked my butt!!! I was sore for almost 3 days!! So, obviously I went back again this week and have decided to make it part of my fitness routine. :)

My sentiments exactly! I’ll be torturing myself with this next week too :) I love a good love/hate relationship with exercise.

they totally do – every minute of torture seems to go by faster and faster the longer you’re at it – and so do the 30 second rest periods.

I do a lot of HIIT moves in the Circuit Training classes I teach. I definitely found my “feel great about my body” weight once I added HIIT into my workout routines! I love them and will definitely be looking through these moves to see if I can ‘steal’ any for class on Thursday morning this week. Thanks for posting!
