one small thing

November 29, 2012

Hi friends! Today’s a big, big day. As of 3pm, I’ll be rocking a “MPH” after my last name! I just have one small thing left to do… present my Master’s thesis to students, faculty, friends and family. I somehow managed to condense my 30 page business plan into 30 puny, but pretty slides.

I’ve been spread a little thin this week between my administrative elf duties (signing on new Elf for Health sponsors and re-pairing abandoned elves) and putting the finishing touches on my Master’s thesis and presentation – but as of 3pm I’ll be officially done with my grad school career!

Speaking of, with the grad school girls all back in town for graduation this week, a few of us went to our favorite yoga class last night for one last shavasana together. Wednesday night yoga was a weekly thing for Libby, myself, Anne and Lauren (who was a bit late & didn’t make the photo) throughout grad school –it was SO good to have them back, if you can’t tell by the hearts surrounding us.

While I’m excited to be finishing grad school, I wish some things never had to change.

Elf for Health Challenge Update: 830+ elves are on the roster for Rounds 2 and 3 (!!! YOU GUYS ROCK !!!) PLUS we have some awesome new sponsors who will be providing awesome prizes for our best elves – Larabar, Ryka shoes, Peanut Butter & Co. and Stickygram! I’m working on a prize package image so you guys can see some of the awesome stuff you might win!

biting into beantown

November 27, 2012

Thanksgiving came and went and I haven’t stopped for a moment since. The hubs-to-be and I are just getting back from a fabulous few days in Boston. On top of kicking off the Elf for Health Holiday Challenge with Lindsay, my weekend agenda was packed with my best friend’s baby shower, a holiday party, 2 very nice dinners out with friends and family, finishing my Master’s thesis presentation, 3 blustery but beautiful runs, a full day of shopping on Newbury Street yesterday and lots of Dunkin’ Donuts.

Breakfast at the airport before our flight back to NC this morning was a taste of home–a perfectly toasted Everything Bagel with a large cup of piping hot French Vanilla coffee from Dunkin’s. We don’t really have Dunkin’s down south quite like they do in Boston.

exercise

Since we were traveling, I braved the blustery winds and ran the same 3.2 mile loop Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was cold but the late day sunlight sure was beautiful on Saturday!

Yesterday was an active rest day– and by that I mean it was a successful shopping day with my best friend. We wandered up and down Newbury Street and worked up a sweat trying on all sorts of beautiful dresses and sweaters.

I snagged this sweater from Madewell, a cream peplum top and sweater from Zara and a cute pair of winter shorts from H&M. In-store Cyber Monday sales for the win!

Now that we’re back home, it’s time to put the finishing touches on my Master’s thesis and presentation. My parents and Rob’s parents are coming into town for my thesis presentation on Thursday and grad school graduation ceremony on Friday. I can’t even believe the big day is almost here!

Elf for Health Challenge Update: We have over 700 elves participating in Round 1 – and almost 800 signed up for Round 2! Lindsay and I are seriously impressed with the support this little community has shown us. Yesterday’s challenge as Meatless Monday–and our daily challenge winner was Mary Catherine. She rocked out 3 meatless meals and did it despite her elf being MIA. We’ve since found her a replacement elf but how awesome?!

Today’s challenge is to write a handwritten note for someone. Even if you’re not participating in the challenge, handwritten notes will always make someone’s day brighter so give it a try! If you want in on the second round of the Challenge (starts December 10th), you can sign up here.

Have a great day, friends!

a gourmet thanksgiving

November 23, 2012

Hi friends! Hope those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday had a wonderful, feast-filled day with your loved ones! The hubs-to-be and I flew up to Boston bright and early to enjoy the day with my brother, sis-in-law and her parents. They put together quite a gourmet Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Menu
prosecco & fresh berries
sliced Chorizo & Manchego cheese
herbed endive & apple salad
cornbread stuffing muffins
roasted lemon cauliflower with pine nuts
sautéed green beans with shallots
sugar & salt brined turkey

I make it a point to get in some exercise before the Thanksgiving feast begin. Once we arrived at my brother’s place, I headed to the basement for a a quick turkey tabata workout, showered and was ready to dig in. Like many of you probably did too, we devoured probably way too much delicious food, sipped fancy cocktails, watched football and enjoyed some good laughs together.

The fiance and I have some big errands to run, on Black Friday nonetheless (noooooo!!!!) –ski boot and wedding band shopping– so I better get my butt out of bed. Just a reminder, today is the last day to sign up for the full Elf for Health Holiday Challenge! We have OVER 450 elves signed up so far. If you want a little extra health & wellness motivation over the holidays, we’d love for you to join us!

Have a great one!
Question of the day: What will you guys be doing with all those Thanksgiving leftovers today?

turkey tabata workout

November 22, 2012

Gobble gobble, Happy Thanksgiving! Before you go unwrapping that beautiful bird this morning though, how about a 20 minute turkey tabata workout? Yes, I went there. Turkeys happen to make great substitutes for medicine balls, which I’m pretty sure you didn’t bring with you on your holiday travels. All you need is 20 minutes, a 10-20 pound, unwrapped turkey (preferably not still living) and some hand soap for sanitary purposes afterwards. The rest of the details are below!

Turkey Tabata 1

Notes (also available in the printable version)

  • Pushup: Modified (on hands and knees with flat back) or regular. It’s perfectly ok to start off with regular and switch to the modified pushup. Legs wide or together for amore challenging variation.
  • Gobble Squat: Hold turkey with both hands, arms bent like you are about to shoot a basketball. Squat down until legs parallel to the floor, knees behind toes &keeping your back flat. (Leaning forward for balance = ok. Curving your spine = not okay). As you return to standing, contract your booty and thigh muscles. Repeat.
  • Turkey Shoulder Press: Hold turkey at the chest (about an inch away, right in front of the sternum). Extend the arms to the ceiling, reaching the turkey overhead, and slowly lower the bird back to the start position.
  • Touch & Go Mountain Climber: Start in plank position. Bring left food forward and touch it on the floor under your chest. Quickly return leg to starting position and repeat with the other leg. Alternate back and forth for 30 seconds.
  • Competition Burpee: Quickly lower to the ground so your chest touches the ground, push and pop up to standing, finishing with a small hop bringing your hands overhead.
  • Turkey Pulse Lunge: Holding the turkey, step your left leg forward and bend your knees to lower your body into a lunge until both knees are bent 90 degrees. Slowly pulse up and down by about an inch. When time is up, push through your left heel to return to standing. Repeat with opposite leg the next round.
  • Turkey Bicep Curl: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding turkey in both hands at the chest. Keeping the elbows close to the body, lower the ball toward the ground until the arms are fully extended. Then curl the ball back up to the chest. Lower the arms back to the starting position.
  • Speed Skater: Cross your left leg behind the right leg as you bend your right knee 90 degrees so thigh is parallel to the floor. Extend your right arm out to the side and touch left hand near right foot. Jump a few feet to the other side, switching the position of your legs and arms.

The hubs-to-be and I are headed to Boston (not so) bright and early this morning (6:30am flights are always a good idea in theory) for a fun weekend with my family. I also have wedding band shopping, my besties baby shower and dinner with another best friend on the social calendar. I’m taking a much needed break before presenting my Master’s thesis  a week from today. I’m feeling incredibly thankful for the path my life has taken over the past 3 years and all the blessings I’ve been given –great family, friends, great health, an incredible education, a wonderful community of bloggie friends and a budding career– what more could a girl ask for!?

I hope you enjoy getting sweaty with your bird this morning, fill up on turkey,  mashed potatoes and pie and have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones!

300 elves & counting

November 21, 2012

Hi friends! Thanks so much for the incredible support you’ve shown for the Elf for Health Holiday Challenge. Lindsay and I are truly amazed at the camaraderie we’ve seen surrounding this challenge. We have over 300 elves already and the list continues to grow by the minute! The daily challenges focus on eating well, exercise, self-love and acts of kindness to help us take a little bit better care of our minds and bodies during this busy & festive time of year.  Just a reminder, if you’re not signed up yet, you have until Friday at midnight to get in on the first round.

eats

Midweek Eats will be back next Wednesday but I wanted to give you a taste of what’s in store, as well as what’s in my belly.

Candied grapefruit peel8

Breakfast this morning was my usual Greek yogurt & granola but I tossed in some homemade candied grapefruit peel to wake up my tastebuds this morning.

Candied grapefruit peel6

That plus a massive mug of cafe con leche, foamed to perfection, and I’m ready to finish up my third, and final draft of my Master’s thesis today.

exercise

I’ve been pushing myself a little harder this week workout-wise trying to earn my Thanksgiving feast before I eat it. Doing 10 extra minutes of cardio or strength work each day this week breaks it up so I won’t feel like I need to spend time twice the time at the gym this weekend working off that extra glass of red wine and serving of mashed potatoes.

  • Sunday: 4 1/2 mile run (as opposed to my usual 4 miler)
  • Monday: 30 minutes of arc trainer, 50 pushups, bicep + shoulder press + lunge tabatas, 30 balancing side leg lifts
  • Tuesday: 20 minute power walk around the neighborhood at lunchtime + 60 minutes power yoga tonight with the hubs-to-be once my final draft is submitted
  • Tomorrow: Turkey Tabata Workout – I’ll post it at midnight for you early birds. (Haha, get it, early birds…) The only equipment needed is, yep, you know it, a 10-20 pound turkey (still wrapped, of course) – it’s meant to be done before that bird gets stuffed and put into the oven.

Well, time to hunker down and get back to my business plan. The only section left to write is the Financial Plan which should be fun since it involves looking up prices for home office supplies and a pretty Excel spreadsheet. I saved the best for last.

Have a great day friends!

Question of the Day: Have you scheduled any sort of pre-Thanksgiving feast exercise? If not, try it – even if it’s just 20 minutes in between bastings!

PS. If you just can’t wait, check out this candied orange peel from last year – I used the same recipe and substituted grapefruit peel this time around!
