I’m sad to report that my Ingredient Challenge date dish never quite happened yesterday. The food processor blade and I had a fight, and the blade won. So, instead of making what were going to be wonderful Whole Wheat Date & Prosciutto Ravioli yesterday, I spent 4 lovely hours in the UNC Emergency Department having my thumb sewn back together!
To make things worse, I went out yesterday morning and bought this food processor just to make this dish! It did a wonderful job with the ravioli dough… but this is as far as I got.
My good friend Will (who is conveniently a Resident at UNC Hospitals) rushed over and off to the ER we went! 4 hours and 5 stitches later, I was back at home and faced with single-handedly cleaning the mess I had made. I found this sign to be a little ironic and mildly irritatiting.
The nice nurse practitioner sent me home with a bunch of gauze and other fun sterile things for my thumb so I can change the dressing and clean my stitches every day for the next 10 days. I can’t say I’m looking forward to that but a least I got a goodie bag from the hospital!
Well, this is about as much typing as my thumb can handle for today so I will end it here! I plan to make my Whole Wheat Date & Prosciutto Ravioli at some point (when I can look at a food processor again and not want to cry) but be sure to check out what the other blog ladies made using dates! Hopefully they had more success with them than I did. Have a great day!

Ouch!! I will have to be careful with my food processor once I get one..I’m very clumsy and can totally envision an emergency room visit in my future. Hope you start feeling better and typing gets easier soon!
Thank you, Cate! I wish I hadn’t learned the hard way but I will use this as an opportunity to write a post on food processor safety! Hopefully it will keep my Nutritionella readers & I out of the ER!
How did you get your hand in there? So sorry this was a dangerous challenge for you!
I was cleaning the blade… went to wipe it down with a towel and well, the towel didn’t touch the blade… you can imagine the rest! Going to check out what you made now!
I guess it’s called a challenge for a reason! You can really say your blood, sweat and tears went into this now :) Get better soon!
I like your passion for cooking – It really shows here!! So glad you are okay. The countdown begins on your speedy recovery & return to making your delectable delights! Can’t wait!
Thanks, love! Can always count on you for some cheer. I am avoiding cooking this week so let me know if you want to grab Mexican! xx
Okay. I don’t mean to laugh BUT… here I am in class catching up on my RD blogs and then I see this big bandaged thumb on my screen! I laughed. It caught me by surprise. I hope you’re okay though. Yikes. That food processor had its way with you. Maybe try a morter and pestle. A little gentler :)
The picture is funny, I agree, mostly because I’m ok and am trying to make the best of it! Glad you had a laugh too! The food processor definitely had it’s way with me but I will get my revenge… Today I ordered a pair of cut-resistant gloves for when I have the courage to go near it again!
OMG! You poor thing :( Feel better :(
ooh….another reminder is not to cut toward your hand….years ago I was quickly pulling a beef stew together and cut the carrots as well as the skin between my thumb and forefinger…. a trip to the Dr. and I was back home complete with stitches before the kids came home on the bus!!!
Ouch! I’ll keep that in mind… I think that’s the place I’m most terrified of cutting!
I was making salsa in my brand new processor tonight and lost my battle while washing the thing. As 3 kinds of peppers and a bowl full of tomatoes went in with the blade all I could do was scream “come to the bathroom with the first aid kit’” I’m on so much pain! I don’t think I will br using it in my TUPPERWARE parties lol. I’m glad I happened upon your blog though!
